Day 26: Anicinabe RV Park & Campground to Dryden’s Northwestern Tent & RV Park

Float plane in Kenora

Stop and check out the plaque where in 1882 the Last Spike was driven at Feist Lake connecting Thunder Bay to the Red River by rail.

Highway 17 cuts through striking walls of red granite in this area. Examples of the red rock can be found in Vermillion Bay, at the giant Inukshuk on the outskirts of town. Vermillion Bay is a small town next to Eagle Lake is a good place to take a rest and acquire food and beverage.

Expect to see many examples, both good and bad, of Inukshuks in the area. An Inukshuk is a rock or pile of rocks used as a landmark by the Inuit people of the Arctic region. Placing Inukshuks on the land was necessitated by a need for a landmark on an otherwise barren land.

From Vermillion Bay head through Wabigoon towards your destination of Dryden Northwestern Tent & Trailer Park, on the west side of Dryden. Dryden, population 8 195, is located on the shores of Wabigoon Lake. The primary industry in the area is pulp and paper. “Max the Giant Moose” is the town’s mascot. Dryden is segmented by the highway and railroad. You can cross the railroad tracks at the west end of town and there is an underpass on the east side. If you want to cross over the tracks in the centre of town you must take an elevator to access the walkway above the railroad.

Your destination for the evening is Northwestern Tent & RV Park. Nature’s Inn RV Park & Marina is another campground located on the shores of Wabagoon Lake. If you need your bike fixed, head downtown and talk to the staff at Barrett Sporting Goods.
